Jaguar F-type 3.0 V6: Test Drive Review

Jaguar's performance cars have always been the stuff of legend and the all-new F-type is set to continue the trend. It's a proper sports car of the old school, with a hefty engine up front, rear-wheel drive and a cabin that's as plush as they come.

BusinessCar tested the most basic 3.0 V6 model, which makes do with 340hp, 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds and 161mph flat out. That's far from slow, but at this level it's more of a rival to the significantly cheaper Porsche Boxster S, while more power and extravagance is available from the S and V8 S models.

Granted, you'd expect a car like this to be interesting, but the F-type is a riot: the entry 3.0 model is still seriously quick and Jaguar has engineered a fantastic crackling exhaust note. It handles beautifully, although the steering might be a little too light for sports car purists and/or Porsche fans. The Boxster S has the edge in other areas too - it may be less powerful at 315hp but it's also cheaper, faster, cleaner and ranks at 108.3ppm next to the Jag's 115.1ppm. The F-type's fresh face and theatricality will no doubt win over perk management drivers, though.
