Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2 DI-D 150 GX4: One Minute Test Drive Review

What's new: Mitsubishi's new and improved large 4x4 was launched earlier this year, and we've now sampled the manual version that brings emissions down to 140g/km - or 1g/km, and one benefit-in-kind band less, for the entry GX2 model.

Excellent: The emissions figure is about as low as a seven-seat off-roader gets in the market, with an official fuel consumption figure of 52.3mpg.

Good: That efficiency gives the Outlander a significant cost per mile victory, for this GX4 model, over rival budget seven-seat 4x4s from Hyundai and Chevrolet. The cheaper GX2 entry is £23,699, but is sparse and only a five-seater, and the £26,399 GX3 is well-kitted.

Average: The driving experience is comfort-orientated and lacking in enjoyment, although a large off-roader wouldn't be expected to be nimble.

Poor: Some of the interior materials don't hide the fact that you're paying significantly less than you would on a premium large 4x4 such as a Land?Rover Discovery.

Verdict

Efficient, well-equipped and reasonable to run, the new Outlander is a credible competitor and big step forward.
