Peugeot 2008 1.6 e-HDi 115 Feline: Test Drive Review

Date: 23 September 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

P11D price: £19,090
Key rival: Nissan Juke
On sale: July 2013

Peugeot has bought into the rapidly increasing small crossover market with the new 2008.

BusinessCar first drove the lowest-emitting 92hp 1.6 HDi variant in May, prior to the car's on-sale date, and now it's the turn of the more powerful 115hp version of the same engine.

Tested here in top-spec Feline trim, it's well kitted out and undercuts a fair section of the core lower medium market in terms of what it offers for the comparatively low P11D of £19,090.

It's a more attractive package than the 207 SW estate that it supercedes, too. Not only is it better looking, but it's good value and well specced with an attractive interior.

Much like the 208 supermini on which it's based, the 2008 isn't particularly memorable to drive. It's reasonably quiet and comfortable enough but nowhere near as well rounded as distinguished crossovers such as the Nissan Qashqai.

The 117hp diesel engine is more potent than you'd expect, and copes well on the motorway courtesy of its strong mid-range pull. At 106g/km it only sits one BIK band higher than the 92hp model, offering 70.6mpg.

The downside is the amount of available space. It's easy to be duped into thinking that an SUV-style car would have heaps of it, but rear legroom is poor. The boot is a reasonable 360 litres but it isn't hard to find lower medium hatchbacks with larger boots (380 litres is about the segment average), so be under no illusions that you're buying into a roomy estate replacement.

The model records a cost per mile figure of 43.7ppm, but it is trumped by fellow newcomers on the small crossover scene including the albeit less powerful Renault Captur in 1.5 dCi 90 Dynamique S MediaNav spec at 39.4ppm and the more powerful Vauxhall Mokka 1.7 CDTi 130 in Tech Line trim, which is specifically aimed at fleet buyers, with 41.9ppm.
