Porsche 911 Carrera: Test Drive Review

Date: 31 January 2013

Category: Sports
P11D price: £83,314
Key rival: Audi R8

Having sampled the seven-speed manual 911 last year, the other end of the Coupe's scale is the Carrera S PDK, the seven-speed auto that's much more efficient than its manual counterpart.

The Carrera S is 50hp more powerful than the standard Carrera, but costs nearly £10,000 extra, while the auto transmission tested here is another £2387. That brings an improvement of 2.8mpg and 19g/km, taking this 406hp machine to a pretty impressive 32.5mpg and 205g/km.

The new 911 is typically evolutionary, gently improving on its predecessor in every way. It's very impressive for performance, driving and now, for the first time, efficiency too, although cost is a big drawback in terms of purchase price and the need to spend cash on the options list for kit that could be standard on cars a quarter of the price. The extra cost of the Carrera S is also questionable for all but the most hardcore enthusiast, as the 350hp 'entry' Carrera is also a deeply impressive car.
