VW Golf R Cabriolet: One Minute Test Drive Review

What's new: Not so much new, but the very last of the previous, sixth-generation Golfs, even though the new model has been on sale for a while. The R Cabriolet is the fastest and most expensive drop-top Golf ever.
Excellent: It's bonkers fast, particularly mid-range, and in a different league to the comparatively mellow GTI. The 2.0-litre TSI engine puts out 265hp, so expect 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds and 155mph flat out.
Good: The styling is sharp, with plenty of exterior cues from the R hatchback, including 'R' badging on the grille and brake calipers, black gloss trim and Xenons.
Average: It's an expensive car but you still get equipment such as a DAB radio, leather seats and 19-inch alloy wheels. Given that it's a previous-generation model and pricey, the RV figure of 32.2% is actually pretty reasonable, too, but then it's still a Golf.
Poor: The cabin still seems reasonably well built, but next to the latest mk7 Golf it has dated incredibly quickly and now looks very old.
Verdict: Obviously not a fleet player but has its place as a top-end halo product to keep the R performance brand alive.
