Audi S3 Cabriolet One Minute Test

Date: 17 October 2014   |   Author:

Just in case there was a niche Audi hadn't managed to fill, it's now added a 300hp four-wheel drive drop-top to its line-up, aiming to offer pace, poise and pose in equal measure.

Excellent

It's a really rather rapid machine, as you'd expect from a small 300hp car, and four-wheel drive means no problems getting that power down. Being able to drop the roof at up to 31mph is also handy.

Good

Visual cues on the S3 work in distinguishing Audi's first-ever S3 drop-top, and the aluminium finish wing mirrors and four exhaust pipes subtly mark it out. CO2 of 165g/km is better than rivals as well.

Average

The S-branded models are supposed to be more hardcore and sporting than their mainstream siblings, but that philosophy somehow doesn't quite come together in the Cabriolet S3's driving experience.

Poor

The price - halve the power and a top-spec 150hp petrol A3 auto is £7000 cheaper and just 114g/km.

Verdict

More pose than performance, the S3 might appeal to a few, and emissions are good, but there are more sensible alternatives within the A3 Cabriolet range that don't carry such a large price tag.
