Fiat 500L One Minute Test

Keen to ride on the success of its 500 city car, Fiat has sprouted a pair of larger versions in the form of the 500L MPW and the 500L. The Trekking version of the latter, tested here, is a pumped-up and more rugged version of that model.
Excellent
Although it isn't a proper 4x4, the 500L Trekking is kitted out with Fiat's Traction+ system and mud and snow tyres, which give it extra grip.
Good
Again, it isn't a pukka 4x4, but for a car with mild off-road capabilities, it's good value and has very low running costs. Official fuel economy is pegged at 60.1mpg and emissions are 122g/km.
Average
Unless you intend to make use of the extra features, you're better off with the standard model. A top-spec 500L Lounge with the same engine costs £700 less than the Trekking.
Poor
Despite improvement, Fiat's build quality and all-round interior quality feels a way behind that of its rivals.
Verdict
If you're likely to need light off-road capabilities then the Trekking is a much cheaper alternative
to estates with similar capabilities, such as the Skoda Fabia Scout.
