Kia Sportage One-Minute Test

Date: 12 September 2014   |   Author:

Kia's successful Sportage has been given a mid-life refresh, with new additions to the range, increased kit, smart new instrument cluster, new alloys and quieter cabin thanks to improved windscreen glass. Top-spec models now get a heated steering wheel and six-way powered driver's seat.

Excellent

For a Kia, the residuals are astounding, with this model achieving a Qashqai-thrasing 46.6%.

Good

The styling still looks fresh today, and the Kia stands out from the crossover crowd, even against much newer rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai or Mazda CX-5. The 564 litres of boot space also leaves the Sportage clear of its rivals.

Average

The 114hp 1.7-litre diesel is adequete, but given the emissions aren't the lowest, more power would be nice, as would more refinement.

Poor

The CO2 of 143g/km compare badly with the new Qashqai's 99g/km and the CX-5's 119g/km, giving the Kia a difficult efficiency story and undoing the good CPM advantage given by the residual

Verdict

Improvements for an excellent all-rounder with class-leading residuals but let down by efficiency.
