Mercedes A45 AMG One-Minute Test

Date: 22 August 2014   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

The A45 AMG is the most powerful A-class going and a flagship for Mercedes' lower medium model. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces a staggering 360hp.

Excellent

That amount of grunt renders the A45 an extremely fast car. Expect 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 168mph. In short, it's very, very quick in a straight line.

Good

Considering how potent it is and the fact that there's a heavy four-wheel drive system underneath it, the A45's emissions are really quite impressive at 161g/km.

Average

Rapid as it is, the Mercedes doesn't feel all that interesting in other areas. There's plenty of grip but very little in the way of feedback through the steering wheel or general character.

Poor

The Merc wins on power, but at 88.6ppm it's bettered by equivalent versions of Audi's S3 at 75.3ppm and the BMW M235i at 80.5ppm, both of which can also crack 62mph in under five seconds.

Verdict

Exceedingly powerful with good emissions, but pricey, and rivals are cheaper and more interesting.
