Mercedes B150 Test Drive Review

Date: 24 September 2014

Along with the lower medium A-class, Mercedes has introduced an Eco SE version of the B-class mini-MPV. The new lower-emitting model is both the cleanest B-class available and replaces the former SE model. A series of tweaks including lower suspension, a more aerodynamic body, a more advanced energy recovery system and a lightweight fuel tank have made for a 9% cut in CO2 and an 8% improvement in economy, leading to official figures of 98g/km and 74.3mpg.

It's only available with a manual transmission, which brings its additional efficiency gains through longer gearing, and is noticeable on the road. Although Mercedes claims there is no change in performance (power and the 0-62mph time are identical at 110hp and 11.6 seconds) compared with the outgoing SE model, the leggy gears mean it needs work at low speed.

In addition to the economy and CO2, the RVs are solid for the segment at 38.4%, and the smart, well-built cabin isn't short on space

Verdict

Strong RVs and low running costs make it a compelling prospect
