Mini Cooper SD Test Drive Review

Date: 05 December 2014

Mini's moves to fill out its range following the launch of the new three-door model in spring 2014 have now got as far as the SD model.

The combination of 170hp and just 106g/km will be appealing to those whose company transport can be of the small and cute variety, even if the new Mini is a more grown-up proposition than its predecessors in terms of styling, interior quality, ride and refinement.

There's not really anything in the sector that can touch the SD for performance versus efficiency, and petrol rivals such as the 138g/km Ford Fiesta ST and 144g/km Renaultsport Clio may be slightly cheaper, but can't get within 7.5p per mile of the Mini's 42.9p figure, although those models do feel a little more like the special sporty range-topping hatchback compared with the Mini's less overt charm.

The SD will also be available in the new five-door Mini hatchback, and the engine, though far from cheap, makes for an efficient yet potent package for those wanting to have fun without the taxman spoiling the party too much.
