Porsche Macan S Test Drive Review

Date: 06 October 2014

Porsche's new baby SUV, the Macan, has been garnering rave reviews, and the diesel is as impressive for whole-life costs as it is to drive

The Macan S petrol achieves only half of what the diesel does. Faster, thanks to the
3.0-litre petrol engine offering 340hp, rather than the 258hp for the diesel, it suffers badly from emissions that are 48g/km higher than the diesel's 159g/km, which is priced identically.

Although the performance is noticeably swifter, the diesel also feels rapid enough to be all that's necessary from an SUV, even one that handles as well as the Macan does, which is better than any of its peers.

The petrol model also suffers a 43.9% residual value which, in isolation sounds excellent, but the diesel tops 50% retained after three years and 60,000 miles, and ends up more than 20p per mile cheaper to run.
If you have to have a petrol small off-roader then the Macan is the best of a small pool, and handles beautifully to belie its size and height, but the diesel does 95% of what the petrol can manage, for a much-reduced running cost.
