VW Golf 1.6 TDI 110 Bluemotion: One Minute Test Drive Review

What's new: VW has set a new emissions low for the Golf, and for its range as a whole - outside of EVs - with the Bluemotion model coming in at 85g/km, compared with the previous model's 99g/km.

Excellent: The emissions figures are fantastic (although Peugeot's new 308 can beat it while offering an extra 10hp of power), and they translate to an official fuel consumption figure of 88.3mpg.

Good: As always with the Golf, and Volkswagens in general, residual values are good, with KwikCarcost predicting 38.3% retained after three years and 60,000 miles.

Average: The performance isn't the perkiest, with the five-speed gearing tuned for efficiency rather than performance. The Golf is also behind the Peugeot and Ford's Focus Econetic for whole-life costs.

Poor: Specification is based on the S model, so not very generous, especially given that the car costs nearly £3000 more than a Ford Focus Econetic and over £2000 more than a 82g/km Peugeot 308.

Verdict

Impresses in isolation, but low-emission Ford and Peugeot models are cheaper to buy and run.
