The A1 now includes a punchy 95hp 1.0-litre petrol engine that is capable of 67.3mpg and emits 97g/km of CO2, meaning 14% benefit-in-kind charges for users.
Excellent
Residuals of 41.9% mean that the A1 Sportback boasts identical whole-life costs to an equivalent Ford Fiesta, while feeling much more upmarket inside and out. Refinement levels are pretty high for a small car too, with little wind or engine noise.
Good
Despite its small engine the A1 proves as capable on the motorway as around town, with the turbocharged 1.0-litre motor providing adequate muscle when up to speed. The interior also feels very well built.
Average
Several 1.0-litre rivals offer greater acceleration, with the A1's long gearing forcing drivers to work the engine hard for meaningful performance. The dash layout also isn't the most user-friendly, with the media system feeling a little behind the times.
Poor
Space in the rear seats is a little on the tight side, with limited headroom and a cramped high-mounted middle seat. Whole-life costs lag behind models such as the Mini Five Door, Skoda Fabia and Mazda 2.
