BMW M4 Test Drive Review

Date: 13 April 2015   |   Author:

A dream company car for the petrol head executive.

Why is it interesting?

Everything is aggressive, including the sports bodykit, addictive bark from the twin-exhausts. and suspension. Each element of the set-up - the steering, throttle response and suspension - can be customised independently by selecting one from the Comfort/Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus settings. The M4 maintains BMW's reputation for extremely precise handling and it's all too easy to get carried away.

How are the running costs?

Driving in the most efficient settings brings it close to the official  32.1mpg - impressive considering the M4 explodes from 0-62mph in 4.1secs thanks to 431hp from the turbocharged V6. Even CO2 of 194g/km isn't that bad given the power on offer, which means the M4 is much cheaper to run per mile than an Audi RS5 Coupe or Mercedes C63 AMG at 121p versus 133.0p and 159.1p respectively.

Any other business?

The only downsides (beyond the £679 a month it will cost in BIK payments for a 40% taxpayer) are that even on comfort mode the suspension might be hard to live with over an extended period.

Verdict

The BMW M4 is an exhilarating brute of a car
