Ford Galaxy One Minute Test

The new Galaxy has arrived in the UK , with Ford looking to continue the dominance that has seen it take more than 50% of the segment, ahead of the VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra.
The company predicts that 46% of sales will be the Powershift auto, which is why we're sampling it here.
Excellent
The auto gearbox is very good, providing fuss-free shifting. Refinement and protection from wind noise are also both impressive.
Good
A 35.4% RV is a good result, and better than any rival, which gives the Galaxy a cost per mile advantage, although its higher price in this Titanium X spec does mean the Alhambra beats it on overall cost.
Average
Compared with the manual, the automatic transmission adds 10g/km, costs £1420 and puts another 4.1p per mile on the running costs. There is space for seven adults, but you need to slide the middle row to provide the best balance of legroom.
Poor
Higher trims such as this top-spec Titanium X are preferable in the Ford line-up, as lower ones are a little sparse on kit. There's also no option to leave the gearbox in manual mode.
VerdictThe Powershift gearbox works well and is a useful alternative to consider for urban work. The Galaxy continues to shine as the leading full-size MPV. |
