Hot hatch looks coupled to diesel running costs should make this the ideal sporting company car

1 - Ford says 45% of Focus ST sales are diesel versions and it's easy to see why with 185hp, 67.3mpg and 110g/km emissions.

2 - 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds makes this ST a distinctly warm hatch rather than hot, though the new PowerShift version will drop that to 7.7 seconds.

3 - The 2.0-litre diesel doesn't feel special or sporting in the way you want a hot hatch to feel, but six-speed 'box is slick.

4 - An ear-tickling burble from the exhaust on start-up promises much, but after that the engine is hushed and unobtrusive.

5 - Plenty of 'ST' branding on seats, steering wheel and door sills lift the cabin ambience just enough above a standard Focus'.

6 - Extra dash-top gauges are a classic fast Ford cue, but I hardly gave them a second glance after the first few miles.

7 - Simple variable adjustment for the central cupholder is a doddle to use and makes you wonder why it's not fitted to all cars.

8 - Optional rear view camera costs £165 and is easily clogged with road dirt. It also displaces tailgate release and makes it tricky to locate.

9 - The ST's ride is firm but not harsh. However, more suppleness would be welcome on the daily commute.

10 - Superb handling is a given with the Focus, but the 185ps diesel overwhelms the front wheels' traction to easily for real sporting fun.
