A new 1.0-litre petrol engine is frugal in the Seat Ibiza, but also surprisingly fun says Al Suttie.

- Parsimony and pleasure rarely go together, but they rub along very happily in this 95hp 1.0-litre turbo petrol Ibiza.

- Taking the frugal but first, it claims 67.3mpg and we saw a real-world 63.2mpg, which ain't half bad.

- CO2 emissions of 98g/km are also decent for an engine that offers feistier performance than you might think.

- Okay, so 0-62mph in 10.4 second won't worry any hot hatches, but it feels nippy off the line and strong through the gears.

- It helps the turbo petrol has that distinctive three-cylinder burr that makes it a pleasure to rev hard.

- Using the engine's full ability might not help with economy, but it's sure enjoyable thanks to the way it pulls.

- The zingy engine is aided and abetted by the light, short gear shift, while fine handing is also a welcome Ibiza trait.

- There's also a compliant ride, tight turning circle and better refinement than in most superminis.

- A demerit for the Ibiza is the rear seats are shorter on legroom, even for kids, than a Skoda Fabia.

- For the driver, though, it's all good and the £145 optional Full Link pack lets you hook up your smartphone for music and apps.
