As hinted at in the opening report  (in the 28 May 2013 issue), I'm enjoying being behind the wheel of our A3 Sportback.

What first struck me was the confidence with which the Audi manoeuvred through winding 50mph country roads. Audi has, on average, reduced the weight of the car by 80kg compared with the previous model, which has improved both the ride and handling, and this is evident in the way it smoothly negotiates said twisting routes.

My colleagues assure me it's not quite as good to drive as its rival, the BMW 1-series, but nonetheless, for someone, like me, who is not a 'driver's driver' but appreciates a little fun and speed yet wants a car that is also forgiving, the set-up feels nigh-on ideal.

Next to grab my attention was how little noise from the 2.0-litre diesel engine, road and passing cars enters the cabin at motorway speeds, and this, along with the car's on-road performance, helps to create a calming environment.

The A3 Sportback has made a very impressive start to its life on the BusinessCar fleet.

Verdict

  • Performance at speeds of 50mph-plus
  • My iPod not compatible with MMI system
