Our Fleet Test Drive: Audi A3 - 7th report

The pop-up Multimedia Interface (MMI) screen on the Audi A3 with traffic congestion information
Mileage: 12,324
P11D price: £22,455
Our average consumption: 53.6mpg
Official combined consumption: 67.3mpg
Forecast CPM: 47.8p

The A3's satnav is straightforward to operate and comes with all the standard features and more of a modern system.

Of particular use is its ability to list congested roads on the pop-up MMI screen that also displays a variety of navigation information, though I favour the simplified guidance on the small screen next to the speedo.

Full UK postcode entry is possible, too. However, that postcode entry can occasionally take you not quite to the expected destination, while on a trip back from Lincolnshire the satnav, pictorially at least, had me ploughing through a farmer's field, rather than on what must have been a relatively new road.

I'm also having trouble maintaining the balance between 'entertainment' and the 'voice guidance' volumes, with instructions alternating between blasting out over the music or whispering beneath it, depending on what mood it seems to be in.

Audi is not alone in having an imperfect satnav, but that doesn't make it any less irritating.

Verdict

  • Easy-to-use satellite navigation.
  • . but the system suffers the odd glitch
