Our Fleet Test Drive: Audi A4 - 8th report

Date: 05 April 2016   |   Author:

The merits of the rather excellent Apple Carplay infotainment system were discussed by my colleague Tristan Young with regard to his Skoda Superb here, but the system is working its way into various cars, including our Audi A4.

As Tristan said, it's a simple execution, and particularly good in terms of podcasts and reading out and replying to text messages.

The downside is that you need to plug your phone into the USB cable. That's no hardship (apart from my propensity to rattle through cheap cables at a rate that makes me think buying a proper one might be cheaper), but I'm also a big fan of the wireless charging pad fitted to our A4.

Rather than plugging in the lead, you merely need to lay the phone on the pad in the centre console and it'll recharge automatically. Audio streaming of podcasts or music can then be done through Bluetooth, although without the hands-free functionality of Carplay.

The car even lets you know on the screen that it's charging the phone, and also gives a spoken reminder that you've left your phone in the car when you turn off the engine. That's in addition to the alert on the screen that all new VW Group cars seem to offer these days when the phone is connected to the Bluetooth system.
