Our Fleet Test Drive: Hyundai i30 5dr - 5th Report

Date: 28 April 2013   |   Author: Guy Bird

Despite it being practical, fold-flat rear seats would be a welcome addition to our Hyundai i30.
Mileage 9442
Our average consumption 40.8mpg
Forecast CPM 41.4p
Actual CPM 46.5p

Our i30 has been put through a series of practicality tests of late.

An early Ikea ordeal required the seats to fold (almost flat) and the boot to take three long and large shelving flat packs and their associated draws - easy and no problem. Then there was the delivery of a full-size mountain bike with a puncture to the repair shop. Due to the large hatch aperture and sizable seat-down space of 1316 litres, again it was mission accomplished. A five-up drive to a Premiership football match - three kids in the back with one in a booster plus two adults up front - was all good. Plus it has firm seatbelt sockets that resist diving at the slightest push - into the depths between the seat back and base - unlike a certain Uruguayan striker at Liverpool.

However, one test has so far been a bridge too far. Despite my insistence that it will be "fine", admittedly from the comfort of the driver's seat, I can't persuade my five-a-side team, some more out of shape than others, to pile into the i30 for a lift to play football. Practically perfect at practicality then, but five adults is a push.

Verdict

  • Good build, low tax, steering options.
  • Long gears, old-style info screen.
