Our Fleet Test Drive: Jaguar XF - 7th report

Date: 13 November 2014   |   Author: Tony Rock

Our Jaguar XF Sportbrake's boot has been sufficient for domestic chores and trips to the recycling centre, but one notable rival offers a lot more room with the seats down

It might be a £36,440 executive car with all the trimmings, so seemingly above menial chores, but it's also an estate car. Executive car or not, the Jaguar wasn't going to escape being used as a loadlugger.

It's made a couple of recent visits to the local tip - once to carry several bags of leaves following the annual cutting-of-the-hedge, and secondly to carry discarded equipment and home improvement materials in the wake of some domestic building work. And yes, I did lay some old carpet over the boot floor to protect the Jag's unmarked interior.

The boot size of 1675 litres with the rear seats down (550 litres with the seats upright) has been more than enough for the above tasks, but if you think you might want to carry more on a regular basis, then maybe you should consider the enormous Mercedes E-class estate, which provides 1950 litres with the seats down.
Granted, that's the biggest in class (and the biggest of any estate on sale in the UK) but it's still a rival for the XF. Other rivals include the BMW 5-series Touring (five litres smaller) and the Audi A6 Avant (five litres bigger.)
