Our Fleet Test Drive: Mazda 3 - 8th report

Date: 30 September 2014   |   Author: Hugh Hunston

After more than 5600 miles on board Mazda's more than competent third-generation 3 hatchback, we thought it would be interesting to see how its larger sibling the 6 Tourer (pictured above) compared in terms of sharing SkyActiv running gear.

They both harness the 150hp 2.2-litre diesel engine/six-speed manual transmission combo. But despite the larger, roomier 6 wagon being 108kg heavier and carrying more people and stuff over 1400 miles, its fuel consumption at 49mpg was only 1.4mpg shy of our 3's average. These compute to being a yawning 24% and 27% respectively below abstract combined official figures.
