We've been clocking up the miles in our Mazda 6 estate at a good pace over the past nine months and with the 12,000 mark fast approaching it's first service time.

The nearest Mazda dealer is TW White and Sons in Byfleet and we've used them before when we ran a long-term Mazda CX-7.

TW White offers a collect and deliver service if you book far enough in advance. In this case, three weeks' notice was plenty and the car was whisked away at the exact time I?had requested.

A phone call from the service department just after lunch confirmed the service had gone exactly to plan and there were no surprises.

The cost came to £220. Even living in Surrey, this seemed a touch on the high side to me for a first service, but the car did return much cleaner than it left. The service also meant that two days later I didn't have to worry about adding nearly 600 miles in one day with a trip to Brussels for a conference.

It was a trip that the 6 made very simple and stress-free by being the perfect long-distance cruiser. And even after such a long time behind the wheel my back didn't even start to grumble.

Verdict

  • Best all-rounder in the segment
  • Low-grade plastics, mirrors don't autofold
