Our Fleet Test Drive: Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - 10th report

Date: 25 March 2015   |   Author: Tristan Young

With the Outlander plug-in hybrid about to be defleeted, there's just time to have another look at running costs. We already know that the company car tax saving over the diesel equivalent is massive: the PHEV will cost a 20% tax payer £396 a year, while the diesel costs £1768.

But what about fuel cost? Over more than 7000 miles we averaged 50.1mpg, which works out at 10.5p per mile. However, we also had electricity costs, which took the total to 11.9p.

For a diesel to return 11.9ppm, it would have to be doing 46mpg. At this figure, the fuel cost is probably even between the two, but a tax saving of £1372 a year means it's a win for the PHEV every time.
