Our Fleet Test Drive: Peugeot 208 - 5th Report

Date: 02 August 2013

Mileage 1477
Our average consumption 53.3mpg
Forecast CPM 45.8p
Actual CPM 40.3p

In terms of build, the 208 feels compromised due to weighing about 114kg less than the lardy 207.

The new Peugeot is more compact and ostensibly roomier than its predecessor, but it lacks the inherent sold feel of an equivalent Ford Fiesta or VW Polo, an impression aggravated by an annoying intermittent creak-squeak cum rattle from the front offside corner. Perhaps it is a legacy of the recall requiring removing and refitting the engine bay undertray, but on poorly surfaced urban roads it takes the edge off a more than competent and pliant drive.

Elsewhere, cool blue ambient lighting round the panoramic glass roof rim and nicely backlit instruments make night-time motoring more tranquil, while the speedo is blessed with clear 30mph and 70mph markings; something other Continentally sourced brands conspicuously lack.

Verdict

  • Sharp styling, chilled night-time interior.
  • Elusive creaking and squeaking.
