Our Fleet Test Drive: Seat Leon ST - 3rd Report

We could be looking at a fuel efficiency record if the Leon's good start is anything to go by

It's rare that BusinessCar's long-termers don't average at least mid-40s for fuel economy, and recently we've had some in the mid-50s over the six months we live with them, including the Audi A3 Sportback, Peugeot 208 and BMW 320d ED, while the 2.2-litre Honda Civic managed an average 58.2mpg and the Renault Captur that's currently in our care (see report above) is so far running at 57.1mpg.

But I think the Seat Leon ST Ecomotive could be about to set a new high. At the moment, our record holder (apart from the range-extender Vauxhall Ampera, which returned 94.0mpg) is the Skoda Superb Greenline's 58.6mpg achieved across 12,000 miles.

So far, over four tanks of fuel we're running slightly ahead of the Skoda, and I'm positive that with a littlebit of efficiency-conscious driving we'll break the 60mpg barrier for the first time.

And the great thing about the Leon ST is that it's practical, well-equipped, good looking and has a pretty perky 110hp 1.6-litre diesel engine. So it's basically compromise-free, offering trailblazing efficiency in an excellent all-round package. I'm happy.
