Our Fleet Test Drive: Vauxhall Zafira - 3rd Report

Date: 14 August 2013   |   Author: Tony Rock

That large silver dial in the middle of the Vauxhall Zafira's dash can be pressed in as well as rotated.
Mileage 1540
Our average consumption 41.7mpg
Forecast CPM 50.9p
Actual CPM 53.8p

Me a man - me have no need for instruction manual. Unfortunately, that Neanderthal approach hasn't served me well so far in the Zafira's cabin, mainly because it's not that intuitive.

Take, for instance, the satnav - it took me ages to figure out that to engage the 'enter' function meant pushing in the rotating silver dial around the larger of the two control knobs in the middle of the dash.

Then there's the deep storage bin between the driver and the passenger that doubles as an armrest. actually, there isn't one, and no amount of pressing, pulling and sliding of what I thought was its lid was going to make it magically appear, although Vauxhall does supply a sliding tray plus a coverable separate storage area beneath that. And as for moving back and forth between podcasts on my iPod - don't get me started.

Of course, such criticism is invalidated once one becomes accustomed to the car, or if one were to seek the refuge of a handy tool like the instruction manual. I'm getting closer to admitting defeat, and I'm hoping that once I open its pages, I'll discover that what I'm taking as direct challenges to my masculinity are, in fact, a range of innovative solutions.

Verdict

  • All-round visibility, seven-seat practicality.
  • Interior controls could be more intuitive.
