Trafficmaster's new system can help avoid scenes like this

Trafficmaster has launched a new service that sends you a text message when there are delays on your regular commute.

Drivers can register up to four routes by calling the service and giving details of the major roads on the journey. Up to the minute information is then sent should there be any delays on the route.

The service, dubbed Route Guard, is available on all mobile phone networks by calling 1740 and costs 25p per text. Tim Owen, head of traffic services at Trafficmaster said: "Traffic is a problem for many commuters as our traffic monitoring network receives around 24,000 congestion alerts a day, leading to over 30,000 hours of wasted journey time."

Vehicle tracking company Tracker has offered a similar up-to-the-minute personalised traffic service for the last two years, where customers have to call a number rather than receiving automatic text messages.
