Universities learning from leading EV exposure

The UK's universities are averaging a 7.8% ratio of electric vehicles on their fleets, giving them a leading insight into how the fledgling technology can be applied.
The country's academic institutions own a total of 264 electric vehicles, from the Renault Kangoo and Nissan Leaf through to an electric racing car, motorcycles, golf buggies and tractors, according to research carried out under Freedom of Information requests by Intelligentcarleasing.com.
The most popular model among responding institutions was the Aixam Mega microvan with 30 employed across the country, one ahead of Renault's Kangoo ZE. The research also found a total of 15 Nissan Leaf models, three Peugeot Ions, two Mitsubishi i-Mievs and a single example of the electric Citroen Berlingo, Renault Zoe and Smart Fortwo electric.
Pete McAllister, marketing executive at Intelligent Car Leasing, said the universities' unique position gives
them an advantage in adopting EVs.
Because they have closed grounds, electric vehicles are more practical, so it's easier for them to go the next step," he said. That means the experience gained with operating buggies and small utility trucks helps to increase the confidence in making the move to electric cars and vans.
