The start point for the best source of fleet information

Kia Ceed SW: Test Drive (continued)

Category: Lower medium
Prices: £12,995-£14,995
Key rival: Vauxhall Astra Estate

A 1.6-litre petrol and two 1.6 diesels are available. The 120PS petrol is the weakest, needing to be worked hard to offer any kind of performance, while the 113PS diesel (there's also an 89PS) is the pick of the range. Noise is kept to acceptable levels, though a little more deadening to limit vibration from the engine wouldn't hurt. And despite a decent work-out on our 140-mile drive route, we couldn't get the trip computer to read less than an impressive 40mpg average.

The Ceed SW also represents good value, with this top-spec LS trim - climate control, cruise control, alloys, parking sensors and leather-trimmed interior are all standard - scraping under £15,000, significantly less than its volume rivals.

The car, though, has a utilitarian quality that's epitomised by styling that does more too avoid offence than induce any emotional attachment.

Kia is moving rapidly towards the mainstream, while the seven-year warranty shows the confidence it has in its quality. Under new management, Kia claims, too, that it's getting the back-office functions right to start attracting 'real' fleet business. The Ceed SW is the obvious next step with that. The volume brands should be treating it as a serious rival.
