But so what? It's bursting full of character and this version could be the first one to win over your heart. Skoda says the blackened side windows help make the current Roomster's controversial styling a little more palatable.

On the road it drives just like the standard Roomster (no surprises there), but that also means it will average 54.3mpg and slip into the lowest diesel 18% BIK tax bracket. It's not quite a natural entertainer through the curves, but grip levels are high and everything is safe, with a ride that fails only to soak up the sharpest of bumps.

We drove the 1.4 TDI that is vocal but sounds throaty and fun. But with just 80PS on tap, be prepared to work it very hard when carrying more than two people.

On costs the butch Roomster matches the top '3' trim for P11D and low running costs with, further reasons for not having a heavy and thirsty 4x4 drive. It also receives roof rails, skid control and unique 16-inch alloys as standard.
