Volvo V70: Test Drive (continued)

Date: 19 November 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

V70
Category: Estate
Prices: £26,495-£38,180
Key Rival: BMW 5-series Touring

All this will make you think the V70 could be the frontrunner for anyone looking for an executive estate. And if the BMW 520d with its clever CO2-beating Efficient Dynamics package didn't exist the Volvo would be.

So the 520d is only 0.3ppm cheaper to run and the lease rate is substantially higher, but given it will be the driver who makes the ultimate choice in this area, tax will have some influence, and in this case the driver is £68 per month better off by picking the BMW. That's like being given your first tank of fuel (or 600 miles) free. Every month. Not only that, the BMW's quicker than the Volvo, is a more involving drive and has a smoother automatic gearbox.

If this sounds like a pummelling for the Volvo it's not - it's a pummelling for all BMW's rivals in this class.

For some, however, £68 a month still isn't a big enough incentive to drive a BMW with all the negative comments the badge can attract. If you're one of those people, then the next best is the V70.
