BMW 125i SE convertible: Test Drive

P11d price: £26,190
Key rival: Audi A3 convertivle

The convertible version of the 1-series finalises the range of BMW's smallest model.

At launch we tested the 120i, and now we've got hold of the 125i, the first six-cylinder-engined car in the line-up.

At £26,190 the 3.0-litre petrol is only £1000 more than 120i. However, the benefit-in-kind tax band leaps from 19% to 27% while fuel consumption drops from 41.5mpg to 34.9mpg.

On the up side, not only do you get a much better engine note, but performance is significantly improved, dropping the 0-62mph from a not unreasonable 8.4 seconds in the 2.0-litre 120i to 6.8 secs in the 125i. The result is a much more relaxed drive with power for overtaking immediately available without having to worry too much about which gear you're in.

Running costs also suffer with a near 10ppm increase in costs to 58.7p.

Verdict: A heart, rather than head purchase. Fleet sensibilities mean the 120i is a better bet.
