Toyota Land Cruiser Invincible: Test Drive

Date: 02 July 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Large 4x4
P11D price: £38,645
Key rival: Land Rover Discovery

The Land Cruiser has never been a Chelsea Tractor. Despite being a big off-roader, the eight-seat Toyota doesn't have the brand appeal of, say, a Land Rover Discovery and it doesn't have the on-road prowess.

However, new, luxury-spec Invincible trim and a refined 3.0-litre diesel make it an excellent alternative to a Discovery if your business needs a 4x4 to tow (although not more than a total weight of 3500kg as the Land Cruiser won't take a digital tacho) or head off-road.

The extra eighth seat also gives the Land Cruiser an added advantage, although the rearmost seats do rob boot space when not in use.

However, buyers may baulk at paying nearly £40,000 for a Toyota, even if spec-for-spec it is good value for money against its Land Rover rival.

Verdict: Great off-road, great motorway refinement, but just don't show it a corner. Expensive too
