Vauxhall Corsa SRi 1.6 Turbo 3dr: Test Drive

Date: 31 July 2008

Category: Supermini
P11D price: £13,770
Key rival: Peugeot 207GT

Vauxhall has filled the gap between the common-or-garden Corsa range and the 190PS VXR hot hatch with the SRi trim level.

Available with a 125PS diesel engine or the 150PS turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol unit driven here, the SRi differs from its lesser siblings with a bodykit, bigger alloys and chrome exhaust, as well as sports seats.

The SRi certainly feels sporty to drive, and the very harsh ride is closer to the VXR's than a standard model's, while the petrol engine provides a pleasing turn of speed, though its 35.8mpg and 189g/km aren't great compared to other similarly-powered rivals.

Running costs are also a little on the high side, with Emmox putting the £13,770 three-door petrol SRi at 41.8 pence per mile.

Verdict: Looks great and has the pace to match, but the costs aren't great and the ride is hard
