Alfa thinks there's room in the market for another rival to the Mini, and claims the new Mito will not only be as cool and good-looking, but that it will be able to match it for residual values too.
The Mito does look good in the metal - Alfa has been very clever in limiting colour choices to avoid dull blues or boring greys - but figures from Kwikcarcost show that while the new supermini beats the Mini on list price, this advantage is lost in depreciation. It's also beaten for fuel and SMR, although it regains ground in insurance costs.
However, if you consider other supermini rivals, it not so much that the Mito loses out to the Mini, but that the Mini is so far ahead of the pack. Only the Seat Ibiza can match it on cost per mile thanks to a very low start price.
Move away from costs, though, and the Italian car becomes competitive. For a start, the Mito's interior feels better constructed and is more spacious than the Mini's, although Alfa only provides four seats as standard (a fifth seat is an option that also adds split-folding rear seats).
