The new Mazda 3

What's new

Mazda's new lower medium 3 model is off to a decent start in the corporate arena, building volumes nicely according to the brand. Having sampled the core diesel model, it's now time to look at the 120hp 2.0-litre petrol version.

Excellent

A residual value of 35.5% is impressive for this volume segment and backs up Mazda's claims of being beaten only by VW's Golf.

Good

A sub-120g/km figure for a 120hp petrol hatchback is reasonable, even if Ford is about to get the Focus under 100g/km for its 100hp Ecoboost model. The 3 is also good to drive. The petrol engine is a decent unit and belies its 120hp, leaving the cost per mile below that of a diesel.

Average

Some of the interior design and materials aren't maybe quite up with the class best.

Poor

The infotainment system isn't the most intuitive on the market and can be confusing.

Verdict

Mazda's new 3 is a well-rounded car, and it's worth closely checking whether the cheaper but less efficient 120hp petrol engine stacks up better for overall costs than the diesel.
