What do you make of the Labour MP, Janet Anderson, who claimed a massive £13,851, in mileage expenses alone! It makes you stop and think. She must have driven nearly twice around the world in the space of a year on parliamentary business. Give us a break! Literally!

Costing the earth

What do you make of the Labour MP, Janet Anderson, who claimed a massive £13,851, in mileage expenses alone! It makes you stop and think. She must have driven nearly twice around the world in the space of a year on parliamentary business. Give us a break! Literally!

Have you ever seen such an expenses claim, which came on top of rail expenses of nearly £2000?

If the expense claim is bona fide then she ought to stop and think about what she's doing. MPs are noted for having to attend many late night sittings (witness the number slumped over in session!), so how she can be safe attending Westminster, her local constituency and driving all those miles is beyond me. She must be averaging a thousand miles a week and doing all her work on top.

Perhaps she fills her time driving from A to B and looking busy but even if the mileage is all in a good cause, what danger does she pose to other road users in her vicinity? The government bangs on loud and clear about our duty of care responsibilities and quite right too. It is also attempting to get us out of our cars and onto public transport to reduce our carbon emissions. In that case, shouldn't it get its own house in order first?
