The type of vehicle that we drive is changing and the options available to us shifting.

Not just in terms of technology but also the shape and size of the cars and vans that we select, and the reasons we choose them.

In recent years we have seen the emergence of crossover vehicles, one of the first of which was the Nissan Qashqai. They didn't exist a few years ago but now many drivers favour the practicality that they provide and rival manufacturers have got in on the act.

Conversely, there has been a trend has been towards smaller and more economical vehicles. With a focus on cost and emissions, smaller and lighter vehicles can deliver the low running costs desired and practicality in urban areas.

To some extent the market is polarising and for drivers there is broader choice. With this context, it has never been more appropriate to fit the vehicle to the individual need. A clear understanding of what you need from a vehicle and a priority order is essential.

If you live in a highly populated area where parking is an issue, you probably don't want a big vehicle. If you carry a lot in your car, a supermini won't work. You get the point - match the requirements to the vehicle.

Choice is a good thing, but only if you make the right decisions. The good news is that whether your motivation is cost, efficiency, safety, comfort, storage or something else - there will be not just one, but a range of vehicles out there for you - you just need to find the right one.
