Phone warning as death driver jailed

Date: 02 December 2006

Businesses have been given a stern reminder of the dangers of drivers using their phones on the move after a HGV driver was jailed for causing a fatal accident by reading a text message.

Andrew Chrisp from Alnwick in Northumberland hit the back of a queue of cars on the A1 in February, killing a primary school teacher.

He admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for three years. Judge Michael Cartlidge described his actions as "appallingly irresponsible".
