Business drivers are paying mere lip service to company bans on using mobile phones at the wheel, according to a survey published by leasing company Alphabet.
Two-thirds of the 557 business car drivers polled for the survey called Risk and Reward 2007 said their company had a ban, but only one-third said they paid any attention to it. That statistic fell to one in five if they'd opted out of the company car policy.
The results of the survey, which was carried out in December 2006, may well have been different had the tougher phone-driving penalties come into force earlier. From 27 February, the fine goes up to £60 and three points for drivers caught phoning and driving without a hands-free device.
