£34m cost of exaggerated mileage claims

Date: 12 September 2007

UK companies are paying at least £34m over the top for employee mileage claims, according to new research by Global Expense.

The firm, which claims to be Europe's largest employee expenses management provider, says a combination of inaccurate guessing and inflation of actual distances leads to the problem.

"Our research with a number of large organisations showed that mileage claims went down by at least 5% when employees knew their claims were being checked," said Global Expense managing director David Vine. According to the firm, UK employees put through £680m worth of mileage claims in 2006.

The company also found more than 20% of companies did not have valid receipts for mileage claims, despite them being necessary to reclaim VAT.
