Business drivers are a sound judge of audio kit

Date: 07 February 2007

Business drivers are driving forward improvements in car audio systems, particularly with surround sound, according to experts at audio firm Dolby.

The company said it's because more people than ever now have surround sound with their TV at home - and they also want it when they're on the move. "People don't just want stereo any more because the technology is there to make the experience so much better," said a spokesman.

Until recently, Dolby's Pro Logic II was an option only on luxury vehicles such as the Jaguar XK. But it's filtering down, and the firm predicts that will continue as it did with in-car CD players a decade ago.

A version of Dolby's 5.1 system - which means five speaker channels plus a subwoofer - is on the new Citroen C4 Picasso. But the current flagship offering is the first ever in-car application of the 7.1 system, on Land Rover's Freelander 2.

And more's on the way. The spokesman said: "We have new stuff in place to enhance the surround sound experience for cars two or three years down the road."
