DfT denies national hard shoulder motorway running is a sure thing

Date: 15 October 2007

?The Department for Transport has denied recent reports the Government will help ease congestion by making motorway hard shoulders available on a more widespread basis.

But a spokesman said the results of a jam-busting trial on the M42 near Birmingham will be published "fairly soon". He said: "The trial was there to see if the ideas worked and after analysing the results they may or may not tell us something."

In heavy traffic, an 11-mile stretch of the M42 hard shoulder is turned into an extra lane, with overhead gantry signs indicating whether it is operational. Cameras monitor the motorway to close off the hard shoulder in the event of an incident.
