Government sets new standards for limo safety

Date: 31 January 2008

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick has unveiled new guidance on the licensing, registration and safety requirements for limousines.

"This new guidance will help operators to ensure that their vehicles can be lawfully used on our roads," said Fitzpatrick. "In the summer we will also be introducing a strict pre-registration check to help make sure unsafe stretched limos are kept off our roads."

This pre-registration safety inspection, required from 1 June, will necessitate vehicles meet standards on weights, dimensions, turning circles, brakes, tyres and more.

A tightening of the law surrounding private hire vehicle (PHV) licensing has resulted in this guidance. Vehicles with up to eight passenger seats were previously exempt from PHV licensing safety checks.
