Labour roadwork proposals to save 'millions'

Date: 26 February 2008

Rosie Winterton

Transport Minister Rosie Winterton has unveiled proposals aimed at reducing disruption caused by roadworks.

The proposals will see road workers take a test on best practice and the latest requirements every five years.

"Better-trained road workers will mean more roadworks completed correctly the first time round, saving the public from further disruption and an estimated £14 million a year in repair costs for sub-standard work and associated costs such as congestion," said Winterton.

The Government's proposals have been announced before the introduction of a permit scheme for local authorities that comes into place on 1 April.

The permit scheme will allow councils to set out conditions on works, such as a ban on rush hour working and the prevention of multiple holes being dug in one area.
