Nurses slam AMAP 'stealth tax'

Date: 03 March 2008

The current Approved Mileage Allowance Payments are leaving nurses funding patient visits from their own pockets because they don't cover the cost of fuel, according to the Community & District Nursing Association.

The CDNA is worried that the 2008 Budget on 12 March will further penalise workers using their own cars on work business and reclaiming fuel cost, as it could contain the results of a lengthy analysis of AMAP rates.

"Nurses, along with many other British workers, cannot simply change the way they use their cars for work - it is built into their contract and penalising them for not having a company car is nothing short of a stealth tax on employment," said CDNA chair Rowena Smith, who claimed the rise in petrol prices has meant members are "effectively subsidising" the NHS.
