Pay-as-you-drive trials given green-light

Date: 20 August 2008

The Government is close to signing contracts with four companies to test the black box technology that could be used in controversial road pricing schemes.

Tests are being carried out to determine what technology is available that could be used for congestion charging programmes around the country.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Transport said: "The trials are being carried out to see what technology is out there and to inform local authorities about what they can use for congestion charging schemes."

At present, only London has a congestion-charging zone in place, while Manchester is holding a referendum on the matter later this year.

A recent report showed congestion in London is back up to pre-charge levels.
